An introduction to longboard skateboarding

Published on by Joseph Samuels

In the 1950s, Karina Keelio, the inventor of the longboard set out to recreate the feeling of surfing on the street, known to a few people as 'sidewalk surfing'. From then on, longboarding has been a hit with both skateboarders, snowboarders and surfers. This article serves as an introduction to the sport of longboard skateboarding.

What is a longboard?

A longboard is similar to a skateboard in many ways, but has some significant differences. Longboards are specifically made for cruising, not doing tricks on. Whether it is used for transportation or as a bit of entertainment, longboard decks are longer and wider than a typical skateboard.

The shape designed for carving the board is like on a surfboard which fits with its original background of surfers putting skateboard trucks or roller skates on the bottom of their boards. This allows them to practise and keep riding when there were no waves.

Longboards can be bought at a fairly cheap price if you shop around. Complete boards can be purchased, which means that it is ready to go straight out of the box .

How to ride a longboard

First of all, the correct stance needs to be established. The right foot is known as the regular with the left foot forward known as the goofy.

Usually, the foot used to kick a ball is the front foot. Getting a feel for the board is important as is keeping feet a shoulder width apart.

To move, simply take the front foot off the board and push when placing it on the ground, just like a skateboard.

How to stop

The easiest way to stop is by dragging the pushing foot on the ground, which is known as footbreaking. This technique should not be used at high speeds. More advanced braking techniques include sliding which involves steering the board sideways, but for beginners, this is not necessary.

Why buy a longboard?

For a start, longboards are a fun and relaxing way of getting some cardio exercise. As they offer the feel of cruising, they are also a great way to relax and unwind. They are also a fairly cheap and quick form of transportation often coming in at a third of the price of a bicycle. As they are basically long skateboards, they greatly improve balance and offer a more stable ride.

Considering that longboards are a form of transportation, it is advised that users wear a helmet at all times while partaking in the sport.

It is also advised that participants consult a GP before participating in any new sport routines.
